Laura & Francee (or Lillian) Snowball
Sobriquets assigned to Katherine Walsh & Judee Gantin The Snowball sisters are a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Is her name Francee or is really Lillian? The photo is at the McCord, but unlike so many others it is not a Notman. These girls are Canadian but they are not from Montreal.
Who are they? Who is G. A. Burkhardt of Fredericton N.B.? Perhaps Mrs L.M. Hart, who gifted the photo to the museum could tell us something? Such are the challenges of taking on a Sobriquet in the Montreal Bicycle Club. |
Update!!!!
G.T. Bishop has reported new information on the Snowball mystery.
shot of the 1901 Census for Chatham, NB showing the Snowball family.

Francee (or Lillian) Snowball also had news to report:
My friend Janice is an expert Ancestry researcher and writer…here’s what she came up with for Francee Snowball - a solid start. Thought you might be interested.
" I looked up Laura Snowball on Ancestry, there were lots of hits. She was 2 years old in the 1881 census, living in New Brunswick, Frances Ellen Snowball was four. There were six siblings in all, oldest was 16. Dad was a timber merchant, born in Nova Scotia, mom was born in Scotland. Grandmother was Lillian Snowball, age 81. There is an article about the father in the DCB.
LAC and a number of university libraries have a book called Playing it forward : 50 years of women and sport in Canada It came up when I searched for Laura Snowball cycling on the LAC site, but no link to a digital copy. I searched the Canadian Encyclopedia, nothing. On www.canadiana.ca there are many hits for Snowball cycling but so many I don't have time to look. Perhaps I am looking in the wrong place -- there might be something in a sports magazine I am not familiar with. Also, there are several websites that search old newspapers, but I am not sure which would be best. One of them is subscription and I don't have a subscription. Sorry, usually I do better, but I may not be looking in the right place. "
