Arthur Edward George
Sobriquet available Represented South Africa at the 1899 World's Bicycle Meet in Montreal.
Served with the Cape Colony Cyclist Corps in the Second Boer War 1901-02. Motor car racer in Britain and Europe, his "Golden Ford" is still preserved. In 1909 he became an active member of the Royal Aero Club. Apparently he did not perform well at Montreal, The Wheel and Cycle Trade Review Aug 17 1899 reported that: " George, the South African, was another man who got into some too fast company. He had his racing wheel stolen about a week ago and could not get fitted with another, to which he attributes his failures" Perhaps it was with that in mind, when he joined the Cape Colony Cyclists Corps, he supplied his own bicycle. |
