6 November Back in The Saddle Ride
Present : Louis Rubenstein & A.T. Lane Minutes by A.T. Lane
The members met at Second Cup for a discussion of the recent local municipal election results, other national news events and planning for the Spring Excursion from Pittsburgh to Washington. Louis rode to the meeting for the first time since his surgery so we decided to have a Fixture ride to Monkland Village after coffee. Welcome back Louis!!!
Minutes by Louis Rubenstein
The meeting began at 9:45 at the Second Cup a tad late as we were awaiting A-T Lane to create a quorum with Louis Louis who had recently come off knee surgery. The April 1 Pittsburgh- Washington D-C adventure was briefly discussed. Undecided was whether we should restrict our transportation to only trains or bikes or perhaps a special case for a car to accompany us on account there would be additional equipment to schlepp as well as sports memorabilia to be obtained in Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Washington and even Philly. No decision was made. Next we ventured out into NDG and rode past Louis Louis first house circa 1978, his daughter's house on Madison and later to his late grandfather's lower duplex on Old Orchard. Thence AT suggested repairing to his house to try on one of the recently arrived club jerseys. No way Jose was Louis Louis reply on account as hills were out of the question. But AT is accustomed to them so the departed and the meeting adjourned.
Louis Louis recalled when leaving the Second Cup that he had placed his saddle bag on the railing whilst I handled the locking mechanism on his bike.. After leaving the Old Orchard memory he thought about the saddle bag and noticed that it was not attached -.someone took it back to Second Cup and left it and restored his faith in humanity!

With snow announced for later in the week the MBC convened at the Shäika Café as is its want. The discussion revolved around the recent voting results at the municipal level. A.T. and Tibby were in general pleased. Aferwards they headed up Griouard and northwards until Queen Mary. From that point it was eastwards to their destination of l'École Polytechnique. There they met Frank Ajersch, former professor in materials at l'École Polytechnique and Peter Barss, public health doctor of medicine. Frank gave the group a walking tour of all the major buildings. In particular he explained the building history of the l'École Polytechnique campus. We had a commemorative discussion of the terrible gun tragedy against women that occurred there in 1989. Frank was able to gain access for the group to the Structural Laboratory. Martin Leclerc, research associate, kindly gave us a quick but in depth tour of the major experimental equipments. The lab specializes in seismic loading of buildings and the integrity of existing bridges. Of special interest was a new structural system that could be introduced to existing buildings so as to bring them up to code for earthquakes. After a light lunch there was also a quick tour of the CEPSUM, the athletics and swimming centre of the Université de Montréal. A.T. and Tibby headed back by way of a steep climb in front of the Oratory St Joseph. Part of it was along the old Kingston Road. The fixture ended at A.T.'s house where we consulted on staging concerns for the upcoming Dramatis Personae theatre production, Bits from the Bard.

10 November Sauvons-la-Falaise-Green-Links Walk
Present: Larry Paul, Lisa Mintz. Patirica Stotland, Pascal Longhi, Kent, Malcolm McRae

There was a short discussion about the name of Dalle Park vs the group's function of promoting Green Links for the western portion of Montreal. The group then met at the centre of the Falaise on a cold November day near Cavendish with the intent of walking to it's eastern edge. Patricia gave advice as to how to perform a bird count planned for 16 December.

There is a path that runs about half way up the Falaise built many years ago. Over time however numerous trees have fallen over it and we had to scramble around each obstacle along the way.
There are various streams of garbage that can be seen to have been dumped from access points along the top of the Falaise.
As part of the Turcot construction a fence was built to separate the endangered brown snake from the actual construction site. The fence appears however to divide the Falaise into even smaller ecozones. The fence's purpose in any case is defeated by having been knocked down in some places.
At it's eastern limit the Falaise forest ends at the Turcot construction site below Girouard. Is the second photo, from the same point, the promised new bike path along the bottom edge of the Falaise? From the planned map it appears as if it is...

After a very cold day, the members met at the Shakia Cafe and planned to route to challenge Louis recovering from the knee surgery. We rode along the Lachine canal to Old Montreal, taking a few photos of the recently opened walking path near City Hall over the Ville Marie Expressway. After a quick lunch near Parc LaFontaine we decided to climb over Mont Royal and to try on one of the warmer team jerseys.

29 November Tour around Town
Present : Louis Rubenstein, H.S Tibbs & A.T. Lane Minutes by A.T. Lane

On an initially mild day, the temperature dropped and mixture of rain changing to snow occurred. The members met at the Shakia Cafe and started the discussion about the Bon Voisinage held the previous evening in which the Dalle park featured in many of the questions asked of the MTQ.
In terms of business, the group decided that we will ink into the club Bye-Laws a provision that all Fixture rides will be done in such a way that cars are not required. It was also decided that the overnight Fixture rides for 2018 be posted shortly so that viewers can make plans as to if they wish to attend. Adding a camping component to some of the rides and having Folding Bicycle / train combination Fixture rides was also discussed.
Since we are approaching the winter cycling season there was a discussion about how studded tires on the front wheel can help avoid falls on ice.

The ride itself was attended by Louis and A.T. only and was around Mont Royal, during which we stopped at Velo Quebec to buy new head scarf for A.T. Lane which is modelled after one previously purchased by Louis Rubenstein. Perhaps this will become part of the Club's Winter uniform. In all a great time was had despite the rain and cold temperatures.
