Eugène Meyer of Paris, who patented a wire spoke tension wheel in 1869 is now seen as the inventor of the high wheel bicycle. James Starley of Coventry, who was formerly seen as the inventor, is now regarded as the father of the British cycling industry. He improved Meyer's basic design, reducing its weight and making the ride much smoother.
